The assessing department organizes, directs, and coordinates the work of property appraisers and office support engaged in the evaluation, reporting, filing, and verification of data and records connected with the assessment of property; ensures statutory deadlines are met in producing the assessment rolls, supervises the maintenance of property appraisal records, assumes the responsibility for technical accuracy, internal efficiency, and the resolution of problems from all aspects of the assessing department; conducts the evaluation of existing methods and procedures to determine possible improvement in efficiency and accuracy; develops and implements new methods and procedures and supervises investigation and resolution of assessment complaints; makes appraisals for borough and city departments as requested. The assessor also administers a training program for appraisers and office support staff and periodically reevaluates all property to determine if it is correctly assessed, defends and cooperates appraisals before the board of equalization, assists legal counsel relative to presentation of cases in a court of law, performs other duties as specified in other sections of this code and AS Title 29 or as lawfully prescribed by the assembly.
